Retreat for the Soul

I leave tomorrow for a 3-day writing retreat. A friend has generously lent me her yurt in a town over our mountain as the crow flies, about 2-hours over McClure Pass, by 2-wheel drive. For those of you who are unfamiliar with yurt’s I will post some photos on my blog when I return on Monday.  For now you can check out this awesome low impact way of living, at the site provided.

I have never been to her yurt, is is solar generated and it should be quite an adventure, as she is out of town and I am going with directions and a set of instructions on how to get things going. She does not live there full time, she uses it to get away and write. She is writing a phenomenal book and I have high hopes it will find a publisher.

I would be lying if I said I was not a tad nervous doing this solo, as there is no land line, cell access or Internet. Here are a few of her warnings, "Don’t be frightened by the coyotes, don’t leave food out for bears, turn everything off when the storms come, make sure the toilet is not running when you leave or it will drain the battery!" Thank goodness I have been living in the west for almost 18 years, as none of this advice was particularly new or ominous.

What is a Feisty Female™ to do? I always advocate leaning into the fear,  I have set up an emergency back up with a girlfriend and she will have a copy of the directions to find me in case I am not back on Monday. Needless to say my family is a bit horrified at this thought, but let’s remember, we have not always had cell, computer or television! It actually sounds heavenly to me right about now.

Solo’s can be an way to access deeper aspects of ourselves and learn more about who we are in the world. In many cultures, solo’s were a rite of passage, helping the young initiate to find his or her way to adulthood. I have done many types of solo’s over the years, but this will be the first of this kind. I’ll let you know how things turn out when I return!
