As someone who began doing this work without a mentor or training program over 20 years ago, I understand what it's like to feel alone and without a supportive community. I chose not to seek a traditional art therapy degree, as at the time it was used as diagnostic tool, and intuitively that didn't seem right to me. How on earth can you diagnosis someone based on his or her drawing or painting? If someone had tried to do that to me, I might have been locked up without a key! 

In 1987, I went for my Master's in Social Work, knowing it would give me the foundation I needed to become a Licensed Psychotherapist and give me the training to following my calling to support people in changing their lives.  Because I chose this path vs. art therapy, I knew I would bring the creative process in somehow once I graduated, as I knew that art had been the only safe haven in my life and since it was traditional art, and I wasn’t a very good “artist,” it wasn’t always “safe.’ I knew there had to be another way. And that's exactly what happened, but it was a lonely and difficult journey. One that you won't have to experience!

Heck, I had no idea what an "expressive arts therapist" was until I found a book that used that Title and that was when I finally understood that what I was doing had a name. I flew by the seat of my pants, without a net until I found authentic community, which was about 10 years into my solo expressive arts facilitation journey. When I found them, it was like finding MY TRIBE, people who understood what I was talking about without explanation, people who were also out there doing this work-for, which at the time-I had no name.

This gem turned me from "untapped" potential type into raving creative. Just realized – as I gear up to start my own business – that it was Sheri's book that set me on the path of blossoming entrepreneur. I approached the book in a relaxed style, using it in a way that suited me. Every month, I let an intention emerge, welcomed but basically unbidden, then a project coalesced, as if on its own, around that intention. For 12 months! Life Change
